Agrifood & Biodiversity Internship - Spring 2025

Intern / Student, Full or part-time · Amsterdam

About Metabolic

Metabolic’s mission is to transition the global economy to a fundamentally sustainable state. We advise governments, businesses, and NGOs on how to adapt to a fast-changing global context. Combining systems thinking and data science, we map and understand local and global systems to assess where to intervene and develop solutions that can dramatically shift how the economy functions.

We are an international and dynamic team of over 100 people who share an ambition for catalyzing a sustainable future. Based in the Netherlands, we work at the cutting edge of sustainability initiatives for a broad range of global clients.

About the Role

Metabolic is looking for three interns to support the Agrifood and Biodiversity sustainability consulting team. This team evaluates and recommends systemic change in the food system and works closely with NGOs, the private sector, and the Science-Based Targets Network. We are looking for three people with experience or demonstrated interest in agrifood value chains, smallholder farmers, life cycle impact assessments (LCIA), regenerative agriculture, business case development, and/or data analytics.

These internships focus on working with private sector organizations to redefine their sustainability and biodiversity targets and develop action plans that have a strong business case for the companies and the farmers they work with. We work with leading NGOs and agrifood companies to conduct impact assessments, develop measurement frameworks and create roadmaps for mitigating impact at different spatial scales.

In your internship, you will focus on one of the following roles:

Role 1: Landscapes Intern

  • Assist with conducting and summarizing interviews and desk research on how agrifood systems and organizations are impacting ecosystems, biodiversity, soil and water quality

  • Keep up to date on relevant policies and global trends that impact how sustainability initiatives are applied in the agriculture sector

  • Use a systems thinking approach to map and identify drivers and levers within a system

  • Support in analyzing regenerative agriculture actions and create roadmaps for implementation

  • Help prepare research and reports related to food, agriculture, and biodiversity

Role 2: Nature Intern

  • Help to develop data-collection and target-setting projects around biodiversity for food and agriculture companies

  • Help to analyze company and global data on environmental impacts, using data processing and LCA.

  • Draft corporate roadmaps for implementation of these targets (e.g. Science-Based Targets for Nature)

  • Support in creating monitoring frameworks for companies with bespoke biodiversity tracking needs

  • Work together with the consulting and data team to present the results of our findings and our recommendations to corporate clients via presentations and/or reports

Role 3: Data Analyst Intern

  • Analyze company and global data on environmental impacts within agrifood systems

  • Help deliver agrifood projects through LCIA and spatial analysis, including data processing and other related tasks

  • Collaborate with the Agrifood and Biodiversity team on data asset and method development

  • Help formulate data outputs into clear and actionable sustainability insights

The internships start in March  2025, and should last for five to six months. They require four to five days of work per week. The internships provide a stipend amounting to €877.59/month pro-rata (based on 40 hours per week) each.
